Children’s Playground: Surrey Memorial Hospital

Paul Deol, from McElhanney Engineering, Surrey office, spoke about the intersection of events – his son’s stay at Children’s Hospital and follow-up at Surrey Memorial and McElhanney’s 50th Anniversary in Surrey – as the catalyst for the Children’s Playground at Surrey Memorial. An existing courtyard playground had been deemed unsafe for children and needed to be replaced. As McElhanney’s Surrey office was looking for a 50th Anniversary celebration project in the community, the playground was adopted and the Hospital was approached and agreed to work with McElhanney to create a new space for children.

The Playground will be a functional space for play and rehabilitation for kids with physiotherapists. Innovative design features will include a Ball Wall and Blocks and Stocks for children to build their own structures.

A budget of $250,000 was formulated and fund-raising began, resulting in our Rotary Club donating $4,000 and many businesses donating staff time and materials.
