John Block said his lovely bride has offered up a food card draw – for everyone that meets their quota of $2000 in food cards they will have their name entered into a draw for a $500 food card from Rose Block

Mary made a request for a handyman and Rod suggested the Rotary Plus Network to find people that you might need for different services.

 

Sandy introduced the guest speaker Jason Beck who is the curator for the BC Sports Hall of Fame

He spoke about his book The Miracle Mile that he wrote and breathed new life into the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games including exclusive footage of John Landy and Richard Bannister’s famous race where they broke the 4 minute mile and the marathon that Jim Peters, the favourite to win, staggered into the stadium and failed to qualify when people on the sidelines ran in to save him as he was visibly collapsing and in distress. They thought he had completed the race but with 200 yards left they rushed in to get him and he was disqualified from the hardest race of his life. 

 

His books is a compilation of stories from these games that took 8 years to interview many of the participants of these events and then scale back his book by half before publishing. He stayed to sign copies of his book and was fascinating to listen to. Lucky us!
